Turkish citizenship may be acquired by birth or subsequently under the Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901. Below are the main legal routes to obtain Turkish citizenship without investment.
1. Citizenship by Birth
A child automatically acquires Turkish citizenship if born to a Turkish citizen mother or father, regardless of whether the birth takes place in Turkey or abroad.
A child born in Turkey who cannot acquire any citizenship through their foreign mother and father (stateless child) also acquires Turkish citizenship by birth.
Foreign nationals may acquire Turkish citizenship under the following legal routes:
A foreign minor adopted by a Turkish citizen may acquire Turkish citizenship, provided that there is no obstacle in terms of national security or public order. The adoption must be legally valid under Turkish law.
Foreigners who have been married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years and whose marriage is ongoing may apply for Turkish citizenship.
Marriage does not automatically grant citizenship. Applicants must prove that they live in genuine family unity and do not pose a risk to national security or public order.
Any adult foreigner who has legally and continuously (Within the period specified by the Ministry) resided in Turkey for at least five years may apply for Turkish citizenship.
The five-year period may be completed through a valid residence permit (The type of residence permit specified by the Ministry) or a valid work permit.
In addition, applicants must:
Demonstrate intention to settle in Turkey
Have sufficient knowledge of the Turkish language
Have sufficient and regular income
Have no criminal record affecting public order
Not pose a threat to national security
Meeting the five-year requirement does not automatically grant citizenship; the final decision is subject to state evaluation.
Foreigners who:
Establish industrial facilities in Turkey,
Create significant employment, or
Provide extraordinary contributions in scientific, technological, economic, social, cultural, artistic or sports fields
may apply for exceptional Turkish citizenship.
Exceptional citizenship is granted by Presidential decision and is entirely subject to state discretion.
Certain immigrants officially accepted by the competent Turkish authorities may apply for Turkish citizenship under special legal provisions.
